A 42-year-old tanker driver, Uche Ozongwu, who allegedly stole 950 litres of kerosene valued at N154,850, was on Monday brought before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused, a resident of Apapa, is being tried for breach of peace and stealing to which he pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Tony Elibeh said the accused committed the offences on May 24at Olodi-Apapa on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.
Elibeh alleged that the accused, who had the intention of cheating the complainant, Mrs Nneka Ezenduka, did not supply her the full tank as requested.
“The accused stole 950 litres from the tank valued at N154,850.
“When the complainant discovered the shortfall of 950 litres, she confronted the accused and he claimed to have supplied the woman a full tank.”
The prosecutor said the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was immediately arrested.
The offences contravened Sections 167 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing.
Mr Titus Abolarinwa, the Chief Magistrate, granted the accused a bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned until June 26 for further hearing.
