WARRI—THE Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, is to collaborate with the management of Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, in Effurun, Delta State to organise a workshop on intellectual property development as a vital tool for research and development.

This was disclosed by the President/Chairman-in-Council, NSE, Otis Anyaeji at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun near Warri,  at a public lecture series organised by the Warri branch of NSE.

Anyaeji, while saying that efforts will be made to incorporate the Minister of Science and Technology into the workshop planned for September 2017 at the institute, noted it was time for engineers to assert their position in tackling the challenge of patenting in Nigeria.

The NSE President saidPresident Muhammadu Buhari administration’s philosophy of developing local manufacturing as well as local content, favours indigenous engineers and commended Buhari for conceding to the society’s request for engineers to hold prominent positions in National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, PTI and other professional MDAs.

Principal/Chief Executive of PIT, Prof. Sunny Iyuke, who spoke on patent and patenting aspects of research as well as development, advised individuals to partner institutions in patenting, because of its cost implication and other technical challenges.

Pointing out that the patenting growth in Nigeria is done by International Oil Companies, IOCs, and other international organisations doing business in the country, Prof. Iyuke said if agricultural produce and technological products invented in Nigeria are given the right patenting, it will be bought in other parts of the world.

Warri Branch Chairman of NSE, Goodluck Ohwodo, in his opening remark, tasked members of the society to participate fully in activities organised by it.
