Court remands suspected cultist over alleged murder

An Ota Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, on Monday, remanded a 21-year-old suspected cultist, Azeez Taofeek, in prison custody for alleged murder.

Taofeek, whose address was not given, is facing two counts of conspiracy and murder.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused and others still at large committed the offences on June 3, at about 7:p.m. on Mosalasis Street, Ota.

Gbesi said that the accused and his accomplices, being members of a secret cult known as “Aiye Confraternity’’, conspired and killed one Waliu Folorunsho.

He said the accused and his accomplices killed the victim by violently attacking him with a gun and a cutlass that led to his death.

Gbesi said that the offences contravened Sections 319 (1) and 324 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, ordered that the accused should be remanded in the prison custody, pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution on the matter.

Banwo adjourned the case to Aug. 25 for hearing.
