The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Sunday said right investment in sports would lead to good performance of Nigerian athletes in sporting competitions.
He added that it was time for the country to focus in such direction.
Ambode stated this at the end of the Seamaster ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The competition was tagged, ‘Lagos 2017.’
Ambode said governments and other stakeholders must invest more in sports to take the country to its rightful place in the world of sports.
He said, “We are very happy to have hosted this competition. This is the fourth edition and you can see that this year’s competition attracted more people and countries. The idea is to use sports as a catalyst for the growth and development of the economy.
“It is also a catalyst for tourism. It is my belief that we must support sports as a means of allowing us to develop the mental capabilities of younger ones, and Lagos State is ready to do that.”
Ambode said he was not disappointed even though no Nigerian qualified for the finals of the competition, adding that such called for greater investment in sports in the country.
“We need to do more work to develop our sports. Governments have to support sports thoroughly if we want to see Nigerians in the finals,” he said.
The governor promised to increase the prize for next year’s edition, as well as the number of participating countries.
